A Word About Fragrances

ESSENTIAL OILS VS. SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCE?

People sometimes ask us why we don’t use essential oils exclusively in our formulas. The reason is simple: Essential oils can be harsh, unstable, and often as problematic as synthetic fragrances. Natural essential oils often lack the sophistication of a quality perfume or fragrance. To put it bluntly, they just don’t smell as nice!

The other reason is science. Remember Middle School chemistry, when you learned that oil and water don’t mix? Essential oils require a solubilizer to remain stable in a water-based product. Sometimes, what you end up getting in a bottle of pricey surface cleaner is essential oil, water, and whole lot of solubilizer (with little room for the actual surfactant). It’s more about marketing than actual performance. We only use essential oils that can stand up to a powerful cleaner without losing that lovely scent.

started this company because my son was allergic to a famous, “naturally fragranced” cleaning product. This particular brand used a high percentage of fragrance, which he reacted to every time I used it.

Our exclusive fragrances are one of the reasons our customers love us, but we never like to be heavy-handed. At MH, we like our fragrances to be elegant and sophisticated (rather like our customers). We keep our fragrance percentages low. Our fragrances are just there enough to smell delicious, but never feel like you’ve been hit in the face with it.

But we heard you! Sometimes, you want more of our gorgeous scents. Use them in the laundry, to scent a room, or in our Art-Deco Car diffuser. Anywhere you want a bigger boost of scent.

FRAGRANCE IS LIKE WINE

There are high-quality fragrances, and cheap, industrial ones. At MH, we never cheap out on fragrances and use the same cosmetic-grade fragrances in our surface cleaners as we do in our hand soap and hand cream. We often use a mix of fragrant and essential oils in order to create intriguing scents that go above and beyond the one-note wonder.
