How To Organise Your Drawers

Is there anything that feels more adult than organising your drawers? Sure, taxes probably rank higher, but still—I dread tackling the junk drawer more than filing quarterly. Unfortunately, a well-organised drawer tends to stay cleaner for longer—and it’ll probably cut out your weekly “where’s-my-favourite-lipstick”-induced panic.

Luckily, all you need is an empty afternoon, a few key products, and a bit of motivation. Ahead, how to organise your drawers in three simple steps—plus some serious #organisationporn to help you visualise it.

CLEAN

The first step to organising any drawer is to empty it completely and wipe it down.  We like to use All-Purpose Cleaner on the insides of the drawers, as well as on anything you’re placing inside the drawer. (A Q-Tip can get inside the hard-to-clean corners and edges.)

If you’re organising a dresser and it’s made of wood, you can condition it with our leather cleaner for a shiny finish. Just spray it on, let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe it clean with a microfiber cloth.

ORGANISE

Now it’s time to get to it: Whether you’re dealing with clothes, makeup, or tchotchkes, it’s important to separate your drawer into zones so things don’t end up all over the place. For clothes, this can mean one zone for t-shirts, one for tank tops, and one for undershirts. For makeup, think about separating it into categories like lipsticks, eyeliners, and brow pencils.

For the latter, start by lining the bottom of the drawer in bubble wrap or a rug gripper so things don’t move around too much when you open it, then separate these zones with containers that make the most sense, like shallow cups, vanity trays, or proper drawer organisers

DUST WEEKLY

If your drawer is full of small items like beauty products or utensils, dust them off once a week or as needed. Plus, a well-organised drawer means nothing if dust bunnies are sneaking out from underneath. Make sure you’re dusting underneath your dresser or armoire too.

Think about doing one or two rooms every weekend, and you’ll be finished in no time. Plus, once you’re done, they’re a cinch to maintain! I just bought some shallow drawer organizers for my sunglasses, and they’re a cinch to find when I’m running late and trying to get out the door. I also keep Glass Cleaner and a polishing cloth in there, to remove old makeup and smudges marks right when I put them on. Ah...heaven.
