The Actual Meaning of Boxing Day.

The Actual Meaning of Boxing Day.

Over the last 30 years, Boxing Day has become synonymous with block-buster department store sales. But there’s more to it than fighting the crowds at David Jones.

Its origins trace back to the Victorian era when employers gave their staff "Christmas boxes"—small tokens of appreciation for a year's hard work. It was also a day to acknowledge service providers, tradespeople, and those less fortunate, turning generosity into something of a formal postscript to Christmas.

I like the idea of reverting to the original Boxing Day tradition and spending the day (preferably in pyjamas) shopping online for others. There are deals aplenty that weren't available pre-Christmas. It's like a Black Friday finale, except with fewer elbows and a bit more decorum.

This year, I’m looking for something special to reciprocate an unexpected gift (and other Christmas list drops like the postman, teachers, hair stylist and anyone else I may have forgotten about during the pre-Christmas madness). I also take advantage of Boxing Day sales to snag a bargain on something I may have had my eye on.

Make someone's day with a thoughtful, sustainable MH present and remember to reward yourself for being so generous to others!

Happy Hunting,
